Street tacos are those soft, warm corn tortillas, filled with fresh, hot carne asada, drizzed with a handful of cilantro and onion, and topped with your favorite salsa.
That’s the specialty at Calle Tepa Mexican Street Grill & Bar, located in central Tucson, AZ.
Sash and I were to meet up with Stephanie Yue, a fellow two-wheeled vagabond riding a 250cc Vespa. We had hooked with up her originally in Sturgis, SD last August, and then again in Las Vegas, NV a couple of months later.
Tacos is largely what Sash and I have been craving since we got into Tucson a few weeks ago, and somehow the desire for chopped steak and cheese folded into corn tortillas has never left us.
At Calle Tepa, you get your choice of carne asada, barbacoa, chicken asada, chicken abodaba, carnitas, chile verde, and chorizo. I had one carne asada, and one carnitas. But I couldn’t help ordering one green corn tamale too.
It all starts with Calle Tepa’s house made corn tortillas, made durable enough to keep juicy meat held together, but remaining soft and smooth. The carne asada beef is tender, moist, well seasoned and marinated. I added the restaurant’s very own Habanero salsa for the maximum heat, and down the hatch it went. I swear for just a moment, I was back in San Diego, where I’ve always found the best tacos in the world. The fact that Calle Tepa could take me back there, just goes to show how awesome their tacos area.
Their tamales, are equally as good. The green corn tamales is effectively a standard tamale, with green chiles added, and a touch of sweet in the masa. These are very moist tamales, and if I wasn’t fighting with my weight, I would have had a few more of them.
Calle Tepa otherwise has a full menu of popular Mexican fare, including the locally favorite, Sonoran Style Hotdogs. They have a bar in the back and a large salsa bar.
Sash and I found that Calle Tepa is a great destination after an afternoon of motorcycle riding. She likes to get a frozen margarita, and I prefer a Negra Modelo on tap.
